Carpet Facts We Bet You Didn’t Know!

1. Ancient tribes wove reeds and grass together to make rugs and keep the cold ground warm.

2.  The carpet industry in the United States began in 1791 when William Sprague started the first woven carpet mill in Philadelphia.

3.  Humans shed about 2 grams of dead skin in a 24 hour time frame.  It doesnt seem like much, but if you add that up over a lifetime, you are looking at about 73 lbs. of discarded flesh. Wow!

4.  Wool can be home to beetle grubs (maggots), that have chemicals in their stomachs that convert wool in sugars, causing the insect to eat through carpets and rugs like yummy candy!

4.  Several pounds of soil and dead skin are collected under carpets each year.  Frequent vacuuming sessions can clear out some of this debris but most importantly professional carpet cleanings.  Although it may seem disadvantageous to have wall to wall carpet in your home, a unique ability of carpet  is that it keeps allergens and other contaminants at bay and out of the breathing zone.

5.  Unlike carpets, hardsurface flooring does not have the ability to serve as a “human filter”.  For allergy sufferers, hard surface flooring should be cleaned/vacuumed more often than carpets and should also be professionally cleaned at the minimum, once per year.

6.  All carpeted areas should be professionally cleaned using a low moisture disinfectatnt type of cleaning at the minimum every 6-12 months (more often if there are kids and pets in the home) even when they are not noticeably stained or dirty.  Dust and other air pollutants settle on your carpet and have an adverse effect on your health.

7.  Carpets are said to have been originally from the Middle East.

8.  Carpet and rug making has been a trade since early BC times; a skill that many choose to master artfully to this day creating beautiful masterpieces for homes.

9.  Hubert Cecil Booth created the first vacuum cleaner back in the 1900’s.

10.  New carpet gives off chemical off gassing and should be professionally cleaned soon after it has been installed.

Hoping this served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining our home wall to wall carpets as well as our hard surface floorings to live a healthier life.

Cost of Carpet Cleaning – Ventura County

Cost of Carpet Cleaning? I get this over the phone on a daily basis!!!

Because every home is different in size and the type and soil tracked in is different, unfortunately there isn’t a “one size fits all” category for carpet cleaning pricing.

At Aqua-Dry, there are two ways we determine the price. We charge per room for residential clients and per square foot for commercial clients and we require an “in person” inspection for an exact price as we want to be fair to our clients as well as fair to ourselves as a business.

*Minimum charges range from $150 for carpet cleaning services and $250 for carpet repairs and floor cleaning.

When hiring Aqua-Dry you are not just paying for “carpet cleaning” or “floor cleaning” but also for our Experience, Knowledge, Professional Tools, Materials, and Responsibility/Warranty.

Our in-peron estimates are FREE!  Feel free to call or text Gabby at (805) 444-6708 to schedule your appointment.

Are you ready for El Niño?

El Niño is supposed to be the storm California has been patiently waiting for. We had a little taste of it this past week but apparently, there is more to come! For those of you who know me, I normally would suggest to not worry and to let God do his thing but, let’s admit it, He helps those who help themselves. If the forecast is correct, California’s prayers will be answered and it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for pretty powerful rainstorms! For California, rainstorms are a blessing since we have been in a drought for some time now but let’s be careful what we wish for!

Getting into the nitty gritty, we know excess water can rapidly create problems. Preparing for this kid (El Niño) will put you ahead of the ball game! I wanted to share some tips on how to prepare for this upcoming rainy season.

  1. If you have gutters, check them to make sure they are clean. If you don’t have any, it would be a good idea to install some. Don’t worry, you don’t have to break your piggy bank; if you can’t make the expense now, look for other options. I have pavers in the back part of my house; I opted to install a drain for the excess water to escape. I’ll worry about the gutters later in the year.
  2. Check for any leaks inside and outside the home. Check your roof; the heat may have caused the structure of your home to shrink and to open up creating leak points. A roofer or a handyman can help determine if there is damage (estimates should be free of charge). The inside of your home should be checked as well. Seal any holes from cables and wires that go through to exterior walls.
  3. Check your windows/sills
  4. This is random but still helpful! Check for potential ant invasions. Water attracts ants inside your home and that can totally be upsetting and even embarrassing if you have guests over. Earlier this year I used Eli from Geopest; very knowledgeable and totally affordable!
  5. Store some sand bags. Your local fire station should have some at no charge. I have not made my trip over yet, but it’s definitely in my “to do list”!

If your property has been damaged by water that may have been caused by flooding, roof leaks because of “El Niño”, toilet or sink overflow, time is key! Here’s where Aqua-Dry can help. Excess water causes serious structural damage to a property as well as mold growth if it’s not taken care of in a timely manner. Here is what we suggest you do:

  1. Emergency Service Call: Contact us right away! Whether it is at 11am, 5pm, even 3am, a delay of even just a few hours can increase the severity of the damage.
  2. Inspection and Damage Evaluation: We can help identify where the water is coming from if you have not yet; we identify the type of water (see below for the three different types of water damages).
  3. Water removal process. We do this by using the truck mount system vacuum. The extraction removes the majority of the water which in turn will reduce the drying time of your property. After the extraction, the carpet and padding under the carpet will be inspected to determine if it will need to be removed to protect the subfloor.
  4. Drying and Dehumidification: After we have extracted most of the water, your floors and walls may look dry but they are still damp to the touch. Drywall and wood are porous and will hold significant amounts of moisture. To avoid these from warping or growing mold, we will set up commercial blowers and dehumidifiers to remove the water that is retained in the building materials. We will then monitor the drying process.
  5. Cleaning and Sanitizing: This is the last step of the process. Here we can help with the cleaning and sanitizing of any belongings such as furniture, upholstery, and other items that can be restored.

As I mentioned in the “Inspection and Damage Evaluation”, there are three different types of water in order to assess the situation prior to clean up; clean, grey and black (note: “grey” and “black” are not necessarily the colors of the water that you will see!).

Clean
When a pipe bursts or an appliance breaks down, or there is a leak in your roof that allows rain water to enter your home, the water will be considered “clean.” This is the easiest type of water damage to handle, since there will not be too much bacteria living in the water. The biggest danger clean water presents is if the area that has been damaged is not cleaned and dried properly. This can result in mold and fungus growth. If the water has been standing in your home for over twenty-four hours make sure to let us know.

Gray
Gray water is water that is somewhat contaminated, either because of the nature of the source or because of neglect. For example, if water is left untreated for a long period of time, it can become “gray” water. When a toilet or washing machine overflows, the water would be considered gray because of its source.

Black
The most dangerous of the three types of water damage is “black” water. It is usually a result of natural disasters or sewage damage. Black water can include toxic materials such as bacterial diseases, chemicals, pesticides, microbes and more. If your home has suffered this type of damage, contacts us right away to begin the disinfecting process before you try to handle the problem on your own.
***If we find that you need more than what we can offer, trust that we will be upfront and honest with you. We will also help you connect with someone that will have the same integrity and values as ourselves***

The Importance of Vacuuming

Many are going out and replacing their carpeting with some kind of hard surface flooring because they assume their carpeting is making them sick. Carpeting creates a welcoming environment, it brings warmth to a room, it defines space (visually), but most importantly, it is our human filter!

Contaminated carpets contain dead human skin dust, outdoor soil, dead insects that have disintegrated in your carpeting, dust mite infestations and other harmful contaminants. Did you know that about 70-75% of the harmful contaminants in your carpet can be removed by simply vacuuming? Vacuuming your carpet is like changing the oil in a car in that it is an important part of regular maintenance and keeping it in tip-top shape for it to continue serving its purpose.

Only just a few weeks ago I personally invested in a professional vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter (see image attached) and I have already noticed the difference in the overall indoor air quality of my home. This kind of vacuum cleaner differs from older vacuum cleaners in that they are capable of trapping extremely small micron-sized particles without redistributing harmful particles back into the air. A HEPA vacuum cleaner can trap 99.97 perfect of all airborne particles!!! The price range of these vacuums is about $150-$200; totally worth your investment!

In a nutshell, your carpeting is making you sick because it is not properly maintained. Vacuuming 2-4 times per week and professionally cleaning your carpeting by a company that is IICRC certified (2-3 times per year) will allow you to enjoy your health and the amazing benefits of your carpeting!
